Insuring Your Vehicle
Effective February 1, 2003, insurance cards are no longer considered valid proof of insurance coverage in the state of Georgia (House Bill 994). Exceptions to this are fleet and self-insured vehicles, which require a copy of the fleet card or insurance card each year.
Proof of insurance on a motor vehicle will be the electronic record on the Georgia Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division
database. Your insurance company is required to notify the Department of Revenue of any change in insurance status within 30 days of the date the change is made.
When Changing Insurance Providers
If you have recently changed insurance companies, you may submit a binder with an effective date less than 30 days old as valid proof of Georgia liability insurance. If you have a newly purchased vehicle, you may submit a declaration page with an effective date less than 30 days old as valid proof of Georgia liability insurance.
For additional information concerning insurance requirements, please contact the state's Motor Vehicle Division at (4040) 968-3800.
