The coroner investigates any death that is suspicious, violent, or in any way unexpected. There are other specific cases that the coroner is required to investigate as well. If someone dies who has been ill and under the care of a physician, often the physician will make a determination of the cause of death and there is no need for a coroner investigation. Also, hospice patients are generally not considered a coroner case.Coroner's Office

The coroner, along with law enforcement and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, will determine in each individual case the need for an autopsy. In this situation, consent from the family is not required. There are also certain cases where an autopsy is required by law. If an autopsy is not done, but the family wishes to have one done, they can arrange to have one done at their own expense.Coroner's Office
